More on Matt Campanale

The NHL CBA is 472 pages long.  Approximately two paragraphs of the CBA deal
with the situation that has made Matt Campanale an Islander, at least for
tonight.

Campanale has signed an ATO (Amateur Tryout) agreeement.  The agreement, shown
on Exhibit 17 of the CBA, notes:

"In consideration of the opportunity to play in the NHL, the player agrees to
present himself, upon request of the Club to perform services as a player on
[DATE] at [LOCATION].

This agreement shall be valid for a term of one (1) day, and a Club shall only
be permitted to enter into such an agreement when under emergency conditiions.
Under this agreement, the player shall receive no salary, bonus (of any kind) or
any other form of consideration."

Katie correctly noted that it is only for one day-- it does not appear that he
could sign additional ones to play throughout the week.  The Isles note that the
emergency conditions exist due to injuries to Milan Jurina (already ruled out
for the season) and Jack Hillen.  Hillen himself made his NHL debut by playing
in the final two games of the 2007-08 campaign after playing for Colorado
College.

The Isles/Sound Tigers have signed a number of players to ATOs over the past few
weeks, including Aaron Ness (40th overall in 2008) and Matt Donovan (96th
overall in 2008).  Perhaps we will see two other ATOs over the weekend, if
Hillen is not able to play.

There have been other NHL ATOs signed in the past.  Tom Fenton, a 26 year old
graduate student and goalie coach at Manhattanville College, dressed for the
Coyotes in a game at Madison Square Garden earlier this season.  Two weeks ago,
the Red Wings signed Troy Passingham an ATO to back-up Jimmy Howard in a game in
Vancouver.
